Week 13: Merle Haggard

A sketch in my Moleskine daily planner of someone who inspires me, once a week, every week, in 2016.

Who:    Merle Haggard

When:  Born April 6, 1937 , died April 6th, 2016

Where: Born in California, and spent his entire career touring the  country

Why:    Merle embodied what most people think of when they think of country legends….rebel persona, lots of grit, but paired with a huge heart.

When I think of Merle, my mind goes to my sweet father.  He loved the country legends of Merle’s time, like Willie, Waylon, and Hank.  These songs were the soundtrack of my childhood.

Although my dad was a soft-spoken, gentle giant, who was no rebel, he admired the spirit and collaboration these guys were able to pull off in the world of country music.  All the while doing something they loved, and bringing joy to the masses.

My dad has been gone for almost 15 years now, but upon learning of Merle’s passing, I could not help but think of him.  Maybe we get a chance to meet people we admire after this life when they too leave these earth. This thought makes me smile, and if it is true, my dad is up there talking the ear off  of Merle.
